PSS®E Overview

It is one of the most widely used & powerful network planning software packages in the world. It has become standard planning software across the world. Its users are located on all the continents with a large number of licenses being held by national country wide Transmission system operators (TSO). This impressive demonstration of product acceptance is a result of the underlying technical competency of the product’s features and functions. TSOs worldwide have come to expect and depend upon the technical excellence of the PSS®E product itself and the maintenance organization that supports it

The PSS®E program package incorporates years of Siemens PTI experience and algorithm growth and has been developed in close cooperation with its worldwide users. With this background it has become one of the world’s leading electrical transmission planning software programs. PSS®E provides users with powerful reliability analyses and employs the latest computer technology and numerical algorithms to efficiently solve networks large and small.

PSS®E is one of the most responsive tools with respect to new features and analytical capabilities, addressing immediate user needs as well as future needs. And, in conjunction with the other products in the PSS® Product Suite, it offers a truly open and versatile CIM-compliant platform for data and application integration.

The complete PSS®E package is a comprehensive suite of programs for studies of power system transmission network and generation performance in both steady-state and dynamic conditions. The comprehensive functionalities provided include:

  • Steady-state Analysis for power flow and related network functions
  • Short Circuit Calculation for both balanced and unbalanced faults
  • Dynamic Simulations,
  • Program Maintenance and Support

PSS®E has a completely revamped graphical user interface (GUI), one that’s intuitive and compliant with the many other standard GUI applications. The new interface comprises all the functionality for steady-state analysis, including load flow, fault analysis, optimal power flow, equivalence, switching studies, transient, dynamic and long-term stability analysis.

In addition to steady-state and dynamic analysis, the PSS®E package also provides the user with a wide range of auxiliary programs for installation, data input, output, manipulation and preparation.

PSS®E Modules descriptions  

  • PSS®E Base module: This module includes power flow, the graphical user interface and contour plotting, contingency analysis, voltage stability (PV/V) analysis, Python and IPLAN scripting and transmission reliability assessment
  • Balanced and Unbalanced Fault Analysis (Short Circuit): Fault Analysis in PSS®E is based on a symmetrical component system representation. The positive sequence system model as established in power flow is used directly in this module.  The negative and zero-sequence system data are appended to and saved with the power flow case data, needing only one data file to carry out both power flow and short circuit analysis. No additional validation of such data is required. The various network elements, such as generators, motors, transmission lines, transformers, loads, shunts, dc devices are modeled in the highest level of detail.
  • Dynamics Simulation Control Section and Model Library: The PSS®E dynamic simulation module of PSS®E is a versatile tool to investigate system response to disturbances that cause large and sudden changes in the power system. The dynamic simulation module employs a vast library of built-in models for modeling different types of equipment including renewables, and with capability to create user defined models of any complexity. A new and integrated dynamic simulation plotting package allows for quick generation of plotting with ability to export to several popular graphic formats.

The Transmission Line Constant Calculation (Line Properties Calculator “Line Prop”) calculates electrical parameters for overhead transmission and distribution lines. A standard database containing commonly used conductor types is included in the calculator.

One of the most common configurations is for an overhead line having three phase conductors (i.e., A, B and C) and one or two shield (ground) wires. Line Prop requires as input the voltage level of the circuit, the physical dimensions of the line (height, spacing and sag), and the specification of the phase conductor and shield wire types. For per unit (pu) output, a power base must also be entered.

Line Prop uses the standard equations for line property calculations, such as Carson’s earth correction, eigenvalues, and eigenmodes.
